Components available for custom rods
If you have not been able to find a rod to your liking or you just want a rod that is a cut above commercially available rods that becomes a family legacy, give us a call (507)289-7680. We specialize in custom built rods and can build a rod that fits your specific application and taste using thread art, color combinations and components that result in a unique, one of a kind rod.
Guides
- We use the highest quality guides on all our rods. The frames are all 304 stainless steel PVD coated with different materials that produce color variations. The use of quality guides is critical for both casting distance as well as heat dissipation. This means that you can use a lighter line without fear of heat-induced stress, allowing longer casting or increased vertical alignment when going after bottom-hugging walleyes.

Rod Blanks
- We use rod blanks from several manufacturers based on availability and intended purpose. These include blanks built by St. Croix (Park Falls, WI), Batson (Sequim, WA), Bingham Enterprises (Overland Park, KS), and private label blanks.
- St. Croix rod blanks With changing marketing practices it is becoming more difficult for rod builders to obtain specific blanks built in the USA from St. Croix, who have been producing high quality blanks available to rod builders for years. While the Legend Elite Series (SCV) are still available through a third party vendor, the Legend (SCIV), Avid (SCIII) and Premier (SCII) series as well as fly rod blanks are no longer available to rod builders. We do have a limited number of St. Croix blanks available.
- St. Croix #1 - These blanks meet all original Park Falls factory quality control standards. This is indicated by the use of a factory produced/provided sticker placed above the thread art.
- St. Croix #2 - These blanks are considered factory seconds. They often do not meet the cosmetic standards but make perfectly functional rods. We stress test each blank before building these rods to ensure that the blank can withstand a severe flex of the blank.
- Batson Enterprises blanks Engineered and built by Batson Enterprises, which was founded in 2000 by Bob Batson, formerly a partner with Gary Loomis at G. Loomis Rods. When their company was sold, both Bob and Gary started two independent companies. Recently Mike Thorson joined Batson Enterprises as VP of Engineering and Product Design. His experience was obtained as the Head Designer at St. Croix rods for 17 years. The Batson product line includes Rainshadow and Forecast brands.

Rod Handles
- We typically use hand-turned wooden handles for our rods. These handles provide not only form but also function. We try to match the type of wood (based on density) to the specific rod so the balance point of the rod is at the fore-grip. This saves on wrist fatigue and increased hook-up rates. The other factor is the increased sensitivity of wooden handles as wood conducts vibration better than cork. The result is a striking combination of beauty and function.
- We have approximately 100 different types on hand. If you have questions about a specific wood, please give us a call.
- Laser Engraving - The final step in personalizing your custom built rod. We have a laser engraver on-site, and can engrave text and most images.
